Mister Max, The Book of Lost Things, by Cynthia Voigt+
At first, Max is sitting with his parents, who are the owners of The Starling Theater Company, and they are eating Sunday breakfast. Max explains that they have Sunday breakfast instead of Sunday dinner because you cannot perform in a matinee on a full stomach. They get a knock on the door, and his father gets a invitation to go to India with Max’s mother. Not including Max. They send another letter to the person that wants them to come to India and said that they would decline if their son does not get a ticket as well. The person says he will give the son a ticket. They decide to go. Max wants one last painting lesson and promises to get to the boat on time. He is on time, but there is no boat with the name that his father said to board! He asks the harbormaster about the boat. The harbormaster says they have never harbored a boat by that name. But Max’s father and mother are gone! He goes to his grandmother’s and tells her. She says he can live with her, but he declines because she cannot pay for him. He becomes independent and learns how to find lost things usually by accident and earns money. He meets many people that help him through. At the end of the book, he uncovers a clue and solution. And he learns where his parents are.
Bottom line: It’s a very good book. It is quite long, but I loved it and I read it in two days. I would say it is for 5th-9th and of course older. It is mysterious and you get to know even the lesser people in the story. It is well written and I really loved it.
